EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy modality that enables people, and now mammals, to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of healing that once took years in talk therapy to make a difference.
Of course, our animal friends don't verbally process in the same way that we humans can, so how do they heal from stress, phobias, or traumatic experiences?
Emanasso, an organization out of France, has developed a treatment plan for all mammals, not just humans, using the evidence-based treatment of EMDR.
Because of my love for animals and my experience in training, I wanted to find a way to help them heal from stress, fears, or traumas. I have completed the certification process through Emanasso and now provide EMDR therapy treatment for mammals of any kind.
So far, I have had the privilege of treating a dog who was in a terrible car accident that took his dog mom's life. He would shake and tremble even when putting on his harness before even approaching the car. Now he is happy to be harnessed and rides in the car with very little concern.
I am currently working with another highly sensitive dog who is afraid of other people, objects falling, or doors opening, including loud sounds. She has made great improvement, as evidenced by her spending time with guests when they visit and staying in the same room while her "mom" is opening cabinets, drawers, etc. Highly sensitive dogs take the most time and effort to support, but are worth it!
In the picture with Nugget, you see Maeve, his just a year old sister. She is a reactive dog and fearful of sounds, other people, and strange objects. Through EMDR, we are working on not being fearful or reactive of things like the blender! She has made great progress. We are also working with professional dog trainers to support her in leash/barrier reactivity as well as other dogs/people. We are learning a lot together!
EMDR for Mammals is new to the US, I am first person to be certified. If you have a mammal that you believe would benefit from EMDR, please reach out to schedule a consultation!
